3 Spring Check It Out! chelseadistrictlibrary.org | 3 Summer Friends of CDL "The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library." ~Albert Einstein The Friends of the Chelsea District Library (CDL) is an organization that fundraises — predominately through used book sales — to sponsor and supplement CDL's extraordinary programming. You'll find this summer is no exception as you read through this newsletter! Come experience Music in the Air with soprano Joy Jan Jones accompanied by concert pianist Jacopo Giacopuzzi (details on pg. 5). Keep the kids engaged with the Summer Reading Program (SRP) challenge, where prizes are awarded for their reading efforts and summer-long programming is offered for additional inspiration. From the SRP Kickoff on the lawn to the program finale Drum- munity, your kids are sure to improve their reading skills all while having fun! (details on pg. 10). Being a Friend of CDL can be fun too! In addition to helping support library programming, the Friends' Board of Trustees meets the 2nd Thursday of every month to plan rewarding events such as the Staff Recognition Party, the Fall High Tea, and fundraising initiatives. If you love your library as much as we do — consider join- ing the Friends. Our leadership team is looking for volunteers to staff our member- ship and communication chair positions. Complete job descriptions can be found online at friends.chelseadistrictlibrary.org. If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Linda Ballard, Assistant Library Director at lballard@ chelseadistrictlibrary.org or (734) 475-8732 x202. Become a part of the Best Small Library in America and join the Friends today! Help Us Keep Our Items in Good Condition! The library checks out over 300,000 items each year and takes great care to process them so they stay in good condition. Here are just a few ways you can help too! • Tears in books: Please don't try to fix these yourself. Let us know and we'll do the work! • Coasters: Please don't use library items as drink coasters. • Discs: Please use clean hands and refrain from using lotion before handling. • Blue Slips: Please use the blue slips provided inside each case to let us know if an item is damaged. This alerts us to review the item and determine whether it requires replacement or removal from the collection. Thank you for helping us take care of our items and making sure they are in the same condition for the 100 th person as they are for the first! Don't forget to renew your library card before the summer begins! It's the best way to let your imagination explore new places and experiences through books, movies, music, program- ming, and all the other great items the library has to offer. 4–5 Summer Features Appalachian Trail Artist in Residency Music in the Air 6–7 Adult Section Korner Stage Summer Reading 8 Technology Section 8–9 Teen Section Summer Reading 9 Donations 10–11 Youth Section Summer Reading 12 Perspectives Favorite Literary Destinations Township Talk Sylvan Township Recognizes CDL Trustee Jan Carr! Join us as we congratulate Jan Carr on receiving Syl- van Township's 2018 Citizen of the Year award! Se- lected from a list of numerous nominations, Sylvan Township Supervisor Tom McKernan had high praise for Jan's efforts. "She's been heavily involved in our township and is very proactive and very informa- tive," McKernan said. "She's a tireless advocate of the library and gives countless hours of volunteerism. We're lucky to have her." As is the Chelsea District Library! Jan has been on CDL's Board of Trustees represent- ing Sylvan Township since 2014. When asked to comment about her role as a CDL trustee, she responded, "I view my role as a reciprocal one. I act as a conduit be- tween the township board and the library, providing information to the township on business conducted by the library and board, and sharing township business and happenings with my fellow CDL board members and library director. A recent coor- dination of these activities has resulted in the purchase of a Little FREE Library by the township, which will be installed and maintained by the library and be available for use by all Sylvan Township residents.
