3 Spring Check It Out! | 3 Winter "Be Someone's Valentine" Food & More for Fines! Feb. 12–18 | Library Lobby With the holidays over, the needs of our community continue well after the decor- ations are put away. CDL invites you to "Be Someone's Valen- tine" by donating items for the Faith In Action pantry. In return, you'll earn up to $10.00 toward your fines from overdue items. While food, cleaning products, and personal products are always needed, items most in demand include: Laundry soap, canned spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, jams & jellies, and full- sized hygiene products. Due to item shelf life, only non-perishable, unexpired canned or boxed food (please no single serving sizes) will be accepted. How does this work? For every item brought in between February 12–18, 2018, we will reduce your fines by $1.00 per item up to $10.00 per account. Laundry soap will be worth $5.00. Items do not apply toward lost or damaged items, or referral fees. Don't have any fines right now? Keep your coupons for use at a later date. 4–5 Winter Features Quirky Winter Sports Sonic Sundays Washtenaw Reads 6–7 Adult Section 8 Technology Section 8–9 Teen Section 10–11 Youth Section 12 Perspectives Fun Ideas for Winter Inside This Issue R D Registration Required Drop-in Volunteer Appreciation Party D Saturday, Dec. 2 | 5:30–7pm | McKune Room Our annual Holiday Open House in honor of all of our wonderful library volunteers will be held on Saturday, December 2, from 5:30–7pm at the library. The holidays are a great time to honor our volunteers, past and present, including our Friend and Volunteer of the Year who will be honored that evening. Enjoy a light buffet and holiday goodies, then watch the Hometown Holiday Lights parade from the warmth of the McKune Room (or from the porch for those who embrace the winter chill)! It is just one small way we can say "thanks" to all of you who do so much to serve your community through volunteering at the library. Engage, Inspire, and Equip with the Friends Come and celebrate the kick off of the New Year at the Friends Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 27, in the McKune Room from 10:30am to 1pm. Brunch fare and beverages will be served. We will approve our 2018 budget and the board leadership team. There will be a "New Member" drawing for a Kindle reader and a workshop on library advocacy. As we look to the future, we remember the passing of former Friends Lew Green (Volunteer of the Year 1997) and Stan Staffeld (Friend of the Year 2007). Lew chaired the Building Site Task Force that considered alternative locations for the library and recommended staying at the present site. Donations in Lew's memory were made to the children's collection. Stan will be remembered for his re-cycle and re-use of shop- ping cart chassis to make the book sale stacks mobile. Donations received in Stan's memory went to the acquisition of seating in the outdoor pergola. Lew and Stan were great stewards of the library through their membership in the Friends. Consider join- ing today. Friends of CDL Used Book Sale D Saturdays | Dec. 9 | Jan. 13 | Feb. 10 | 10am–1pm | Library Basement The winter months are upon us!
