R D Registration Required Drop-in Director's chair Attention card holders with a "29082" number… In an effort to identify each library's patrons within The Library Network, a unique barcode prefix has been assigned to each library. Chelsea's assigned prefix is "29216." Before this change was instituted, some patrons received a library card with the prefix "29082." In the near future, this prefix will be discontinued and will no longer be valid for checkouts. If you have a card with the "29082" prefix, please stop by the library at your earliest convenience to receive a new card with the new prefix. We know some of our patrons get attached to their cards, so to help make the change a little easier, we'll be offering you a choice of our limited edition Snoopy card or our fun, new CDL card. As soon as we have more information regarding the final acceptance date of the "29082" cards, we will pass it along. Thanks to all our patrons, new and old, who joined us during September to celebrate Library Card Sign Up Month! With the help of Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, 169 members joined Chelsea District Library. ~ Circulation Staff Check it out! 2 Winter Welcome to the winter edition of your Chelsea District Library newsletter! As you look over this newsletter, you may notice some changes. In addition to all the wonderful programs that will be offered through February 2017, we will also be highlighting some of our useful services and resources. In future newsletters, you will see even more changes designed to surprise and delight you. Newsletter content will expand to include articles that will add depth to the resources, services, and programming offered at CDL. Also, in an effort to celebrate our creative community, future newsletter covers will feature works by local artists. See below on how to submit your artwork for possible inclusion. This upcoming quarter features more of the wonderful programs you have come to know and expect from CDL. Community favorite Sonic Sundays is back to brighten your winter afternoons (see page 11). This season, we celebrate the first countywide Reads program — Washtenaw Reads. Here at CDL, we are excited at the prospect of the entire county sharing in the experience of reading and discussing the same book. Turn to page 10 for more details. I am particularly looking forward to a series this programming season that explores and celebrates the stories of new Americans and the immigrant experience. This series, entitled What Did They Bring?, highlights our shared history as immigrants and children of immigrants creating a home in this country. Look for the exhibit What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization from the Arab American National Museum and engaging programs that reflect the immigrant experience. We will expand our Stories of Chelsea photograph collection to document immigration stories from our community. Our goal is to capture and present this piece of local history and preserve it for future generations. Consider contributing and sharing your family's immigration story to Stories of Chelsea. For more information about this series, turn to page 3. Our Chelsea District Library Strategic Plan for 2017-2019 culminates with our community open house on Wednesday, January 11 from 5 to 7 pm. At this open house, we will share the vision for the library in the upcoming years. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this process and helped shape this vision. It really was a community effort! Your support of and active participation in this library continues to amaze me. Your ownership of and investment in its past, present, and future is heartening and fills me with pride. I look forward to continued community engagement in our library's mission and plan for 2017-2019. Together, we will continue to build something extraordinary at CDL! Lori Coryell Calling all artists! Share your talent with the library community. Beginning with its Spring 2017 edition, the Chelsea District Library quarterly news- letter cover will feature works by local artists and photographers. Check the CDL website ( for submission and selection details or contact Patty Roberts at Mark Your Calendars! Holiday Volunteer Appreciation Party D Saturday, Dec. 3 | 5:30–7pm McKune Room Our annual Holiday Open House in honor of all of our wonderful library volunteers will be held on Saturday, December 3, from 5:30–7pm at the library. The holidays are a great time to honor our volunteers, past and present, including our Friend and Volunteer of the Year who will be honored that evening. Enjoy a light buffet and holiday goodies, then watch the Hometown Holiday Lights parade from the warmth of the McKune Room (or from the porch for those who like the winter chill!). It is just one small way we can say "thanks" to all of you who do so much to serve your community through volunteering at the library. Volunteers
