Winters in Michigan can be brutal…and long. Perusing the pages of this newsletter, I hope you will be inspired to think of our library as a haven from the cold and damp—a cheery place of warmth and light amidst the snow, sleet, and shorter days; a remedy for the winter doldrums. CDL has something for all ages and interests: join in Washtenaw Reads with folks across the county as we read and dis- cuss Reading with Patrick: A Teacher, a Student, and Lifelong Friendship by Michelle Kuo; get in the game with our winter reading program Hot Reads for Cold Nights; explore our newest tech gadgets at our virtual reality programs; see if there are any snow fairies in the Fairy Garden; or grab a seat by the fireplace and "dream away the cold." However you choose to spend the winter months, we hope you'll consider CDL as a respite from the cold. What's on My Nightstand? Reading with Patrick by Michelle Kuo; Circe by Madeline Miller; The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker; The Iliad by Homer; and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. Lori Coryell CDL Director Snap Shot Invincible Summer (Calligraphy by Gail Geer) "Calligraphy has been more than learning how to form perfectly-shaped letters. It's my meditation; what gives me a sense of peace. I drift into the creative part of my brain and transform my love of the written word into something permanent and beautiful. I also teach classes at USArtquest here in Chelsea and pass along my love for this art to others." CDL is committed to encouraging, collecting, and showcasing our community's cultural output. As part of this initiative, each quarterly cover will show- case artwork or photography submitted by local residents. Interested in having your photo or artwork featured on our next cover?
